Do some Amputees have an advantage?

In the New York Times on January 10, 2008, there was an article about a South African man who has both of his legs amputated. The article stated that the International Association of Athletics Federations says that this man, Oscar Pistorius, has an unfair advantage over the other able bodied athletes. If this is the case, he will not be able to run in the Olympics. this is a main who has broken several records. I found this article to be quite interesting because the technology over the years has become so amazing. When Pistorius was 11 months old he had to get both of his legs amputated. If he would have been born 30 years earlier, the I.A.A.F would not be having this discussion.

I think that the main thing that I really like about this article is the attitude that Pistorius had about the issue. He had such a positive attitude about his "disability", but to him he does not have a disibility. I wish that more people could be like him. He is not complaining about his legs, but instead he is greatful for what he has.

I think that it is quite unfortunate that people can cannot accept individuals for being different and accepting that they have a talent. It is extremely unfortunate what happened to this man, but not allowing him to participate at all would be absurd.

Perhaps there could be more testing on the this man versus other individuals to see if their theory is worth looking into. Otherwise let the man be.

An encouragment for the individual is to become involved in Special Olympics, because there, everyone will be supportive!

Good job on the article! :D
